Application Process.

Are you thinking about studying abroad? Do you know where to start? Are you anxious about the whole process? Well, hopefully this page will help answer some of your questions and release some of your stress!

Choosing Taiwan

Despite all the other temptation (all that choices about different countries), I had my mind set on Taiwan from the very beginning. I've been thinking about studying abroad in Taiwan ever since Freshman year. I really, really, really wanted to go back to Taiwan to study to satisfy my childhood dream. At first, I was thinking about going in the summer, so that I wouldn't have to worry about missing a semester of school. However, I soon realized that I might as well just go back to Taiwan and play instead of study during the summer. Why pay that extra money and study when I can use that money and time to do whatever I want?

So. I ended up giving up that thought, and instead, I went back to Taiwan just to play. Fun fact: I bought the airfare (for May) almost one year in advance. So why and how did I end up choosing to go study abroad in Taiwan? I actually don't really remember how it happened exactly. This summer, I decided to stay and take summer course, so I guess I had too much free time to wonder about what I can do before I graduate. First, I chose my major and talked to the advisor. During the advising session, I realized that I would most likely be able to graduate at least one semester early; so, I decided that I might as well just go abroad during a school semester before I regret it in the future.

*Note: This is not written on this date, the date is more of an estimate of when it happened.

Starting the UCEAP Application

I honestly thought I had more time to think about applying, but I was wrong. I wasn't expecting on applying so early in advance. So, if you are thinking (even if you are just a little bit interested), you should probably check on the deadline for application first to make sure you haven't missed it. *Please note that the UCEAP application is due in advance, and separated, of the host country application.

Remember that you have to submit physical paperwork to the study abroad office as well as the online EAP application. (It might be different for each school, but at least that's how it is at Berkeley)

UCEAP Result

I got the result approx. 2 months after submitting the application. Once you get it, you will be sent an email with directions. Make sure you read the email entirely and follow the direction on there. You will have to confirm your intention to study abroad (the link will be provided to you in the email), so REMEMBER TO CHECK YOUR MAIL FREQUENTLY, or at least once per two days or something.

Host-Country Application

The NTU application was due on September 30th according to the Pre-Departure checklist, but on the official NTU application page said Oct 1 - 30. Just follow the deadline on Pre-Departure checklists though; don't procrastinate. If you procrastinate, you might forget, and if you forget then....

BTW. If you are wondering about how to submit the transcript online, I just submitted a scanned copy of the OFFICIAL transcript. You can request free copies of it (at Berkeley, at least), and unless you want to wait a week to get it, you could just pick it up at the Cal Student Central (Sproul).
